When the forecast calls for rain, having the right clothes to stay dry is key. Have you ever put on a raincoat that repelled the rain yet made you hot and sweaty? That happens because some materials can block water but do not block air. Thankfully, scientists devised a special material called waterproof breathable materials!
Waterproof breathable fabric is a type of material that repels water from the outside while allowing air to pass through. How does this happen? These fabrics have tiny holes that are too small for water drops to pass through, but large enough for sweat to escape. In other words, you can stay dry (and comfortable) even when it’s pouring outside!
Gore-Tex is a renowned waterproof breathable material. This incredible fabric, a very thin layer that goes between two pieces of fabric. The layer is constructed with infinitesimal pores that are 20,000 smaller than a water drop, rendering it fully aqueous impermeable. To add, these holes are 700 times bigger than a drop of sweat, allowing sweat to easily pass into the holes. That way you can stay dry on the inside as well as the outside — whatever the weather!
The magic behind this cool tech lies in the size of holes in the fabric. And the holes used in these membranes are small enough that water droplets can’t pass through, keeping you dry from rain and snow. But the holes are large enough to allow sweat to escape, so you feel comfortable. This technology truly helps to keep you warm and dry, no matter the weather!
