Water-repellent fibers is like a shield for your clothes. When rainwater comes into contact with these fibres, it forms tiny droplets on the surface. Those droplets are too large to be able to fit through the small spaces between the fibres and as a result, the water beads upon the surface and rolls off instead of soaking in. There’s even a nifty design element to help keep you dry and comfortable, even if you spend a while outdoors.
The Science Behind It
Now let’s get into the science that makes these fibers so special. China has given its clothes an unusual secret weapon — a special chemical coating that is applied to the fibers. This coating is referred to as a hydrophobic compound. Hydrophobic simply means that it hates water! The hydrophobic compound consists of long chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms that are tightly packed together. This dense packing of molecules results in a surface that repels water molecules, making it extremely difficult for them to adhere to it. So when it rains, the water just rolls off!
